Counselling & Coaching Psychology

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy that offers a safe, confidential space for individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It helps people better understand themselves, develop coping strategies, and work toward personal growth and resolution of challenges.

Counselling can address a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, trauma, and self-esteem. While some forms of counselling focus on exploring past experiences, others explore present challenges and practical solutions.

Therapeutic approaches in counselling vary and may include:

  • Person-Centred Therapy: Focusing on empathy and your innate ability to grow.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Addressing negative thought patterns and behaviours.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Exploring the influence of past experiences on current behaviour.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Combining mindfulness and values-based action.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT): Designed to help individuals manage shame, self-criticism, and emotional difficulties by fostering self-compassion and kindness.

  • Integrative Therapy: Draws on multiple therapeutic approaches to create a tailored experience.

Counselling empowers individuals to gain clarity, build resilience, and create meaningful change in their lives.

What is Coaching Psychology?

Coaching Psychology is a branch of psychology focused on applying evidence-based psychological principles to enhance personal and professional performance, wellbeing, and goal achievement. It integrates elements of positive psychology, behaviour change, and cognitive-behavioural techniques to help individuals identify and build on their strengths, improve resilience, and develop adaptive coping strategies.

Key features of coaching psychology include:

  • Strengths-Based Approach: Emphasizing an individual’s strengths, talents, and resources to foster growth and self-efficacy.

  • Goal-Oriented Process: Assisting individuals in setting, refining, and achieving specific personal or professional goals.

  • Behavioural Change Techniques: Using evidence-based methods, such as Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC), Acceptance and Commitment Coaching (ACC) and Compassion Focused Coaching (CFC) to promote lasting change in habits and thinking patterns.

  • Resilience and Adaptation: Supporting individuals to develop resilience and adapt effectively to challenges and stressors.

  • Solution-Focused Methods: Encouraging actionable steps and practical solutions tailored to the individual’s needs.
